Newsletter 24th January 2020

It’s my turn to edit and collate the newsletter this week and I am relieved that I can still use the keyboard in my classroom after the Christmas holidays!
As many of you will know, we are fortunate enough to be visited regularly by “Open the Book” who teach bible stories in an entertaining and accessible manner. This week they presented the story of John the Baptist, supported by children acting various parts and wearing appropriate costume. All the children have commented on how much they enjoy the assemblies and how well the stories are presented.
This half term science club are trying something really ambitious. We are attempting to build and fly a hot air balloon. If all goes to plan, next week we will test our design to make sure the balloon works and that it flies, after that our intention is to run a sweep stakes competition to see who can accurately predict how high we can make it go. Watch the skies above Dacre Braithwaite for a UFO shaped flying object!
Mrs Stokes tells us that music is still in the air! “A huge thanks to the PTA for our 15 shiny new glockenspiels. We are looking forward to making music on them very soon.”
Off with their heads!
Class 2 have been learning all about the Tudors and this week have become newspaper journalists to report their learning. They have written accounts about the Battle of Bosworth, where the Tudors first came to power and the reformation where Henry VIII split from the Catholic Church and founded the Church of England. They are looking forward to bringing their learning to life with a trip to the Tudor residence Bolling Hall, in March.
Each Friday afternoon we are privileged to have Mark Jobling in school providing cricket coaching for all three classes. The sessions are great fun but also very comprehensive and cover all round cricketing skills and team work. All of the children are enjoying the sessions and their developing skills will stand them in good stead when we enter competitions later in the year.
This year’s 500 word challenge is under way and Classes 2 & 3 took part in the BBC Live Lesson featuring Zoe Ball, Charlie Higson and Charles Cottrell Boyce. The live lesson focussed on how to choose a setting and a time period for a narrative story. Many children in class three have enjoyed basing their stories on what they have learned about space during recent science lessons, and about Anglo Saxon Britain during history.
Please can we ask all of our parents to be careful as they drive away from school and to keep their speed down on the narrow roads as we have a couple of unhappy neighbours? Many thanks.
We have taken part in plenty of conversations about our collective worship topic, “Creativity.” Here is a thought for the week: “Creativity is inventing, creating, growing, breaking rules, taking risks, making mistakes and having fun.” It’s a strange thought, making mistakes and having fun at the same time, but the more comfortable we become with this idea the better our learning will be.
This week's VX winner was Victoria - well done!
Please could parents ensure that their Parentpay accounts are all up to date/ Many thanks
Have a good weekend, whatever you're up to.
